Plumber in Gananoque, ON

Gananoque at a glance

Gananoque is a town in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, east of Kingston, with 5,383 year-round residents at the 2021 census. The Gananoque River runs through town and the St. Lawrence River forms its southern boundary, and summer brings seasonal residents known as "Islanders".

What that means for your plumbing

A town that fills up in summer has a lot of seasonal plumbing: cottages, island homes and rentals that must be opened in spring and closed before freeze-up. Skipping either step is how pipes split and pumps fail. See frozen pipes in a windy winter.

Inns and tourist rentals

Bed and breakfasts, inns and short-term rentals see heavy use of water heaters and drains for a few busy months. A pre-season check of fixtures and the water heater avoids mid-season failures.

Mills, the 1812 raid and the blockhouse

In 1784 the site was granted to Loyalists John Johnson and Colonel Joel Stone, who built a sawmill here in 1789. Charles McDonald laid out the town site in 1812. During the War of 1812, American forces raided the government depot here to cut British supplies between Kingston and Montreal, and the Gananoque Blockhouse was built in 1813 in response. The name has been written in no fewer than 57 ways over the centuries. Older homes near the river and downtown can have mixed old and new plumbing; see older home plumbing.
