Plumber in Sydenham, ON

Sydenham at a glance

Sydenham, named after Lord Sydenham, sits at the west end of Sydenham Lake, north of Kingston, and is the seat of the Township of South Frontenac. Many residents work in Kingston, and the village is a hub for the surrounding farming community.

What that means for your plumbing

Outside a city water system, most homes here rely on private wells and septic systems. When the well pump or pressure tank fails, the taps go dry. Test well water regularly and keep treatment equipment serviced; see water softeners and filters.

Limestone meets granite

Sydenham straddles the boundary of the St. Lawrence Lowlands, which are limestone, and the Canadian Shield, which is granite. Groundwater can be quite different from one property to the next, so a neighbour's test results don't tell you about your own well.

Mica mines and The Point

Mica mining was common around Sydenham in the 1800s, and many abandoned mines remain, including near Gould Lake. The former Canadian Northern Railway through the north end of the village formed the first rail link between Toronto and Ottawa, and its route is now part of the Trans Canada Trail. The public beach known as The Point was bought by a local women's group in the late 1800s and given to the community. Lakeside cottages here often have seasonal water lines drawn from the lake, which must be drained before freeze-up; see frozen pipe repair.
